The Donald E. Caneva Scholarship was established in 2001 to help promote musical growth to an individual Hersey Band student who has shown promise. An improved Freshman or Sophomore Class band member will receive this award to attend a summer music camp of his or her choice.
Mr. Caneva was the very first band director at John Hersey High School and quickly established a band program that gained national recognition. During his 10-year tenure as Director of Bands, the Hersey Band performed at numerous prestigious events including the "Tournament of Roses Parade," "Cotton Bowl Parade," "Orange Bowl Parade," and the "College All-Star Game." Additional performances included "The Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic" in Chicago, the "Mid-East Instrumental Music Conference" in Pittsburgh, the "Northwest Band Clinic" in Moorhead and the "American Bandmasters Association Convention" in Evanston.
Don was the founder and president of "World of Music" Festivals, arranging music festivals for bands, orchestras, and choirs throughout the United States. He was the conductor of the Coastal Communities Concert Band for almost 20 years, and remained active as a guest conductor and clinician.
