Since Don left Hersey in 1978, many of his former students have had the
opportunity
to gather on a regular basis. They not only recounted their
experiences in the band
program, but also acknowledged to Don personally
the positive and lasting impact he
had on their lives.
Our history, our pride, and our memories come flooding back
with one word no one else can fully comprehend...
GEEVUM!
For this, we thank you, Don!
While Don's passing leaves a great void,
his spirit will live on in the memory of those he touched.
John Hersey High School opened its doors in September of 1968. Through numerous performances and competitions the Hersey Band quickly established itself as a powerhouse. Over the next several years, under the direction of Mr. Donald E. Caneva, the Hersey Band performed with many world renowned guest soloists and conductors, including such notables as Arthur Fiedler, Frederick Fennell, and 'Doc' Severinsen. The band also collected a vast array of awards and accolades at competitions and performances of every kind across the United States.
This website is a tribute to the directors, students, parents, and administration of that era who demonstrated the concept of . . .
"Better because we want to be."
The Donald E. Caneva Scholarship was established in 2001 to help promote musical growth to an individual Hersey Band student who has shown promise. An improved Freshman or Sophomore Class band member will receive this award to attend a summer music camp of his or her choice.
The current Hersey Band is once again starting to emerge as a top-flight organization. Under the direction of Mr. Scott J. Casagrande, the band has received numerous awards and has been as one of the top Symphonic Bands in the nation.
